On the Prowl by Philip E. West Overall size 28” x 14½” Focke-Wulf FW 190. When this purposeful looking, squat, angular aircraft first appeared in the skies over France in 1941 it came as quite a shock and soon gained a reputation and the nickname ‘Butcher Bird’. A superb fighting machine, it served the Luftwaffe in many variants throughout the war.
