Some aircraft are just ‘right’ from their very first flight; the Supermarine Spitfire was one of those. Reginald Mitchell’s aeronautical masterpiece has become a national icon for several generations of Britons and surely many more to come. The quality of the basic design meant the airframe could be continually upgraded throughout World War II to meet the needs of new roles and new enemy threats. For most people however it is the Battle of Britain that the Spitfire will forever symbolize as the heroic ‘Few’ triumphed in the country’s most pivotal time in living memory. A Legend is Born depicts K5054, the first Spitfire prototype, in an early test flight over the fields of England.
