By 1940 the Supermarine Spitfire had been received by a good number of squadrons, though it was still outnumbered greatly by the Hawker Hurricane. 222 Squadron, shown here received the Spitfire Mk 1 in May 1940 and after a working up period in the Lincolnshire area were heavily committed in the Battle of Britain, flying from RAF Hornchurch.
